Under Budget - ROBERT ANDERSON PHOTO - On Dec. 7, the sound of sledgehammers hitting concrete rang in the official start of the Mitchell Field pier demolition project. Harpswell residents voted in March to spend up to $5 million on the job. Reed & Reed of Woolwich was awarded the contract to remove the pier at a cost of $3.1 million, with completion scheduled for early 2019.Donning hard hats, Reed & Reed representatives, members of the Mitchell Field Committee and the public, and town officials gathered to watch as many in the crowd passed around a sledgehammer and happily took a swing at the pier’s causeway.
