Restoring the Cribstone Bridge

Print
The Harpswell Historical Society (HHS) has undertaken the project to restore the cribstone bridge to its original, natural state. There is now a subcommittee that is preparing to address the wiring and telephone poles at this historic site.
This bridge is on the National Historic Registry. It is also included in the comprehensive plan of Harpswell. Harpswell has a gem here that needs to be enhanced and made to heighten its beauty.
Much of the Mid Coast area has featured this bridge in its advertising. Clothing, paintings, stationery, and souvenirs portray the bridge. Most frequently the wiring is not included in these articles. Using the Photoshop software the wiring is now removed.
In the past when the bridge was in operation, people walked the bridge. They visited along the way and watched the fishermen going to and fro. Many tourists photograph this bridge every day. They come from many states to see this unique landmark.
If you look at the other bridges that you cross in the area, you'll notice they are all devoid of wiring. It not only is safer, it is more appealing.
The current restoration of the bridge is an $11million undertaking. The state is supplying 20% and the federal government 80% of the funding. With this commitment from these resources it only makes sense that Harspwell should address the wiring and continue the restoration of our unique gem.
Harpswell, it is time to take care of our national treasure. We need to place this communication wiring under the sidewalk in conduits. The time to tackle this project is now, while all the state equipment is still on site. The project will never get any cheaper than while the workforce is in place.
The HHS will be sending a letter to all Harpswell residents. We will request a tax deductible contribution to implement the replacement of the wiring at the cribstone bridge.
Please consider this plea. Your pride in Harpswell calls for action. You not only will help with the safety factor, you'll be setting the stage for future generations to savor the beauty of our Harpswell historic bridge.
