PGS presents The Forgotten Dead

Date: Sun. 13 Nov, 2016 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Duration: 1 Hour

The November meeting of the Pejepscot Genealogical Society (PGS) will be held in the Morrell Meeting Room of the Curtis Memorial Library, Brunswick, Maine on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at 2 pm. Our guest speaker, Peter Driscoll, will be speaking to us about "The Forgotten Dead".

Peter Driscoll is the retired Executive Director of Amistad, an agency in Portland which serves people with mental illness. Amistad launched the Maine Cemetery Project in early 2012 to build a memorial for the lost and forgotten patients at the former Augusta Mental Health Institute. This effort is part of a nationwide position taken by The National Association of State Mental Health Program Directors in 2001 by mental health advocacy groups to memorialize the estimated 300,000 forgotten dead across the country, and usually at lost gravesites near psychiatric hospitals. In September 2012 the memorial was dedicated in Augusta.

The so-called "brick walls" genealogists often face refer to blank spaces in our personal history with no apparent way or reason around them. The poor recordkeeping, or none, at the psychiatric hospitals could easily be one important factor.

Join us on November 13th to hear Mr. Driscoll speak about "The Forgotten Dead". Everyone is invited to join to the group, beginning with a brief social period before and after the speaker. A business meeting will follow.
